Who is Joseph Brant?

Joseph Brant, also known by his Mohawk name Thayendanegea, was a prominent indigenous leader during the American Revolution. Joseph Brant was a prominent leader of the Mohawk people during the late eighteenth century. Born in New York in 1742, Brant was raised in a Christian household and received a formal education. He became an interpreter for the British Army during the French and Indian War, and he later fought on their behalf during the American Revolution. In 1784, he led a group of Mohawk people to Upper Canada, where they established the Six Nations Reserve. Brant was highly respected by both indigenous and non-indigenous people, and he remains an important figure in Canadian history. Today, there is a statue of him in Hamilton, Ontario, and his legacy continues to be celebrated.

History of the Joseph Brant Museum

Joseph Brant was a highly respected leader of the Mohawk people who served the British Crown during the Seven Years War and the American Revolution. In 1798, as a reward for his years of loyal service, King George III granted him 3,450 acres of land at Burlington Bay. Brant and his followers used this land to build a thriving community that became known as the "Mohawk Settlement". The Mohawk Settlement quickly became an important hub of trade and commerce, and its residents were known for their skill in crafting fine furniture and other goods. Today, the Joseph Brant Museum stands on the site of the original Mohawk Settlement, preserving the history of this important figure in Canadian history.

The Joseph Brant Museum is currently undergoing a transformation project that will see the museum morph into a state-of-the-art, contemporary space. The project is being funded by the City of Burlington and is expected to be completed in 2020. When finished, the museum will boast new exhibits, programming spaces and a multi-purpose room that can be used for events and performances. The Joseph Brant Museum is an important part of Burlington's history and culture, and the transformation project will ensure that it remains a relevant and vibrant space for years to come.
